M81 - M82 Bodes nebulae in Ursa Major 12 million LY

These are a pair of bright galaxies near the Big Dipper easily observed with binoculars or a small telescope.

M81 (left) is a classic spiral galaxy with perfect arms and a brilliant core while M82,

seen edge-on, exhibits signs (the red streaks) of massive star formation.
